Yesterday is the first anniversary of last year’s earthquake. Compared with the day last year, the atmosphere in Chongqing is cooler, it even is raining now.

I had an interesting experience attending an official meeting at the office block of JB Urban Investment Company, which is an official organization, and according to Mr. Chen, my boss, this is a new mode of operation of administration, who try to manage the city as an gigantic company.

Three parties participated in the meeting, the company I work for, the JUIC, as well as urban planning bureau. Prolong and boring meeting is one of party’s major features, before the meeting, we had to wait for a leader for more than twenty minutes, during which we tried to fix the high-tech equipment of representation, which in my point of view, is a very ironic symbol. The servant led us into the big meeting room from where, one can get the full spectacle of CBD from the glass wall. She showed us the equipment for meeting, which is a computer system installed in the big around table, so before every participant there will be a computer screen instead of big screen of projector.

I guess this machine and the new building it located represents the modern image the official would appreciate. But, when we got some technological problem, the servant just can not fix it and be as blank as us.

During the meeting one of my impression was proved that the face of leader’s was particular ugly during summer. It may be because of their fat body and face.

The secretary was beautiful, at least she was an attraction for me during the whole process. One question came to me during the meeting, especially the question arisen by Prof. Yang, during our talking several days ago still haunted me, who really control the city? Can public interests survive under the network of political dictatorship as well as capital poured in?

“You can learn a lot”, Mr. Chen said to me who sat right next to me. Of course, he meant the argument between the chief manager of JUIC and officer of urban planning bureau, I can not tell the detail of the argument, which is not only the struggle of different ideas of the different department of the system, rather exploring the inner struggle between the senior leaders, of which the several guys on the meeting were representative.

“I thought the result can not be good for the city itself” Mr. Chen agreed with me. As the technician, we have no chance to express our point of view. When architecture and urban planning has totally, as Prof. Yang has put it, been tool servicing political power and global capitalism, can one’s ideal city or architecture survive?

Now, I can understand better the worry of Prof. Yang, but I insist that there is hope, part of it laid in the education. If we change the education problem, in the one hand, rebuilt the system into a new work teaching people how to react the real world in the strategic level as quickly as possible, one the other hand back to the essence of architecture, and aesthetic, trying desperately to combination the two, can things be better?

At least, the best way I believe to survive the fate of being slave is to response more positively, to think and act.
