When I was a little boy accepting very limited education related to science and history, I was taught those big names in western scientific history. The mainstream account of science history was totally occupied by western discoveries and adventure, out of which, some Arabic scientific struggle was depicted as temporary store of western ancient intellectual treasures, from which, the Renaissance got it’s power for recovery.
China, has nothing, but repeats the glory of four discoveries, which is a fact reflecting the ignorance of inherit of one nation’s own, due to some complex reason.
Also in historical class, I was taught that the two key words as the propaganda in the May 4th movement were democracy and science, all of which, are facts leading me to a more clear perspective of history and the word.
Science, as I have put it before, is one of the key words between west and east relationship, which generate the huge power sometimes served as weapon to occupy other people’s land and resource. I wonder, is science the privilege of westerners? Or have there been other kinds of science, or scientific activities which may have been un-fortunately buried under the account of history?
Opposite to the prevailing idea considering science as the great leveler between different nations, in fact, science, no matter social or natural science are developed in some extend to satisfy the desire of power dominate over others. Science has been the standard way of observation and description towards the word. When people get knowledge about something, he or she gains naturally the right to account, manipulate, even corporate the things researched.
Is this kind of authority justified?
From this point, in the term of scientific way, as Said put it in his great Orientalism, western power and mind, divided the word into different parts, ours and theirs, the former is national and scientific, the later process nothing about that. This is absolutely a kind of hegemony, which has been developed into a structure can be infused into every social hierarcky.
I came to the realize that there is nothing much to say for Chinese about science, which has totally beyond pure technology, as a certain kinds of culture fixed in the education and social life as well as the way of thinking.
I also was told that, during the dark age in Europe at least, in Arab, there used to be great scientific figures. But what reason made their struggle failed, without the more profound result as a power changed the social and culture structure? Can science be developed without the same time the radical development of civil movement?
